Friendship Group - Visit to The Historic Aircraft Restoration Society at Albion Park Rail

Friendship Group - Historic Aircraft Restoration Society Trip

Our most recent seniors bus trip took us to the Historic Aircraft Restoration Society (HARS) at Albion Park Rail.

We stopped at Sublime Point for morning tea on the way down the coast. The weather was kind but the smoke haze from the bush fire prevention burns took the edge off the spectacular view.

Once we got to the HARS museum, we were broken up into teams of ten and were conducted by a very knowledgeable guide who shepherded us around the huge establishment. The guide explained that not all of the aircraft are in a flying condition; some are just historically significant examples of military or civilian types worthy of preservation. Those that are in flying condition are kept that way by many volunteers and the generosity of many sponsors.

One highlight was a visit to the huge ex-QANTAS Boeing-747 which is parked at the front of the museum in it's final resting place. It is here due to a generous offer by QANTAS, rather than joining many of it's mates at the "bone yard" (a huge resting ground for aircraft) in Arizona, USA. Our members came away impressed with the scale of the museum which proved much more interesting than was expected.

We then travelled to the Master Builders Club in Wollongong for a tasty lunch. Finally, on our trip home we diverted to the look-out on Mount Kiera which overlooks Wollongong. Again, the smoke haze marred the wonderful view but it was still impressive. Then we set off for home after a great day.

Friendship Group - La Perouse Bus Trip

Friendship Group - La Perouse Bus Trip

This was our first trip where we were invited to share the bus with the seniors group from St Patrick's Parish Guildford and Gilroy Village. We first travelled to Ramsgate for morning tea at a park where we were entertained by a large flock of noisy cockatoos.

Then we were off to the La Perouse Museum, where we were given an informative talk by one of the museum volunteers on the significance of the location. This was Captain Cook's landing place and the site has a historical French connection (and is named after the Frenchman La Perouse). The first Catholic Mass on Australian soil was also said here due to the death of one of the friars on the French expedition commanded by La Perouse.

We had plenty of time to wander through the museum to take in the many interesting exhibits as well as time to enjoy the beautiful weather in the surrounding grounds.

By this time, we were all feeling the need of the Yarra Bay Yacht Club for lunch! The staff at the club managed remarkably well to deal with a bus load of hungry seniors who all enjoyed the meal as well as spirited conversation! After lunch, our return trip went via Kurnell to complete the link with history.

Missionary Sisters of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Today, the parish community came together to honour the Missionary Sisters of The Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen Of The World - Australia, in honour of their fourtieth anniversary of ministry in Granville.

The 10.00am Mass was offered by The Apostolic Nuncio to Australia, His Excellency Most Reverend Adolfo Tito Yllana, with whom the Sisters work closely with in Canberra. Father Andrew and Father Paul Chu Van Chi, Chaplain To The Vietnamese Catholic Community at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish at Mount Pritchard, also assisted. Sister Justina Tran, Superior General of the Order, was also present and accepted a gift on behalf of the parish. The Church was adorned in red flowers, red being the colour used to celebrate forty-years anniversaries.

After the Mass, The Chapel of Our Lady of Fatima was dedicated and blessed in honour of the Sisters' work in the parish. A commemorative plaque was displayed to highlight the anniversary.
